Memphis Tennessee March 5 – 7

We stayed the 2 nights at an Oreo Cow Dairy farm.  They have pigs, goats, cows, horses, chickens, swans, ducks, cats and dogs.  It is a beautiful family farm 40 minutes outside of Memphis.  If you wanted to, you could help with the chores feeding the livestock and collecting eggs.  That was something Laureen was interested in doing but we spent long days in the city.

City Tour and Sun Studios.
Had a wonderful 3-hour tour of Memphis City.  A highlight was the Peabody Hotel and the marching ducks.
SUN STUDIOS

It was pretty cool doing a tour of the iconic studio which gave so many of the great musicians their start.  Jerry Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, BB King and of course – Elvis.

They still use the studio today.
This X is where the singers would stand.  Yep, Johnny Cash and Elvis stood where Laureen is standing!
This is an original microphone used at the peak of the studio operating.  Yep, Laureen is having fun.
We had lunch at the sandwich shop Elvis used to go to.  We lucked out and got his table.
Of course, we had to eat the fried peanut butter and banana sandwich.  Mark had a side of grits, which he found disgusting.
The peanut butter was so thick, it was hard to get down.
We toured the Civil Rights Museum and saw where Martin Luther King was assassinated.  The history was mind blowing.
The walking bridge to Mud Island.  Might be familiar to you.  Tom Cruise ran across this in the movie The Firm.  It is 1/2 mile long.
Beale Street is like Bourbon Street/Frenchman Street in New Orleans.  We were there Sunday night, and the place was just starting to get active.
Glad it’s Sunday.  Still tired from Mardi Gras.
Not sure why we are seeing these signs everywhere ????
Graceland Museum was larger than we thought but Graceland Mansion was smaller than we expected.  Laureen likes Elvis but not a “fan girl” but now she has more respect for The King.
Come on in…
The Billiards room was the most fascinating room
Of course, the Jungle room was pretty neat.
Check out the carpeting on the ceiling.
It was wonderful to learn,  the Meditation Garden is open from 7 am to 8:30 am free of charge.  You can walk the grounds and enjoy the tranquility.
It was interesting to see all of Elvis’s accomplishments and who in the music world took aspects of him and integrated them into their style and wardrobes.
John Stamos’ character on Full House was named after Elvis’s twin brother, Jesse, who didn’t survive long after he was born.
Kid Rock
KISS
Bruce Springsteen
The airplanes were pretty funky looking.  The “Lisa Marie” plane has fold out couches and chairs that make into queen size beds, plus a large dining table, seating area and 2 glamorous restrooms.
The smaller plane hurt my eyes.
A trip to Graceland wouldn’t be complete without signing the brick/stone fence.
Surprisingly, Bass Pro Shop was a hit.
It’s in a Pyramid shaped building and houses a hotel, Walburgers, bowling alley, shooting gallery, full bar and a restaurant.
There is a 12 story fully glassed elevator that takes you up to an outdoor viewing area of the city.
Of course, what Bass Pro Shop wouldn’t be complete without Alligators?
On to Nashville with a stopover in Jackson, Tennessee to sleep in a Walmart parking lot.  Yep, we are living the dream! ????
