We stayed at an AirBnB. Lovely snacks were awaiting us ????
The Airplane Museum. Very well done.
Gander was where planes would stop to refuel on transatlantic flights.
Steel from the South Tower on 9/11. Really hit home the strength of the buildings.
The Silent Witness Memorial. In 1987 a plane returning with military personnel stopped for refueling then crashed just outside of the town during takeoff.
Crappy weather, again ????
Didn’t stop us though. We followed the “Come From Away” play points of interest.
Gander International Airport
“Mark the toque is red, not pink. Trust me”. Mark learned to ask for a second opinion after this purchase.
We started talking to the bartender, who was a pretty interesting person. He mentioned that Beulah Cooper was just in the Legion and went home. One of the main characters in the Come From Away play is based on her. The bartender gave her a call and she came down to talk to us.
A lady of many interests and talents, she is famous for delivering sandwiches tea to the Legion whenever they had an event. She became a food organizer when the planes landed iin Gander over 9/11.
Vince and Kim enjoying one of Newfoundlands treats.
After a couple of hours visiting with Beulah in the Legion, we invited her to join us for supper. She accepted and we went to Rosie’s (which is also in the play). We hit it off and after supper we went to her home to talk some more and watch the various interviews that she has saved to her PVR. What a treasure trove of information! It was really interesting.
We enjoyed seeing her Screech In kit and Beulah gifted us with some Newfoundland lapel pins.
Around 11:30 pm she sent us on our way with the question “Can I make you a cup of tea and a sandwich?”
Love her!!
Neat things from our travels in the area.
